Rotary’s vision and mission similar with mine, says Chime

The Enugu State Governor, Mr. Sullivan Chime says the vision and mission of Rotary International is in tandem with the policy thrust of his administration.

Governor Chime also described the rotary as a selfless and humanitarian organization that delights in giving hope to the hopeless and making life more meaningful to the people.

The governor made these remarks when he received in audience the in-coming district governor, Rotary International District 9140 Nigeria, Lady Elizabeth Ogugua Nwankwu and his executive who called on him at the Government House, Enugu.

Governor Chime, who was represented by his deputy, Mr. Sunday Onyebuchi congratulated Lady Ogugua Nwankwu on her recent elevation as the district governor-elect for Rotary International, District 9140 Nigeria and the first woman to have held the position in Nigeria.

He expressed confidence that lady Ogugua would like other Igbo women in various offices of trust, do well to write her name in gold.

The Governor, pledge government’s readiness to continue to support and partner with the organization in its efforts to better the lot of humanity.

On their request for a parcel of land for the building of a breast cancer centre, the governor promised to give it a favourable consideration and also assist in the building of the centre in the state.

Earlier in her address, Lady Ogugua described Rotary International as an organization of different people united worldwide with sole aim of providing humanitarian service, encourage high ethical standards and help to achieve peace in the world.

The in-coming district governor expressed happiness that the Rotary clubs in Enugu had been partnering with the state government in the socio-economic development of the state.

She enumerated some of the achievements recorded by the club in the state as the establishment of farms for indigent widows at Amechi Awkunanaw, Enugu South Local Government Area, construction of motherless babies home at the Cathedral Church of Good Shepherd premises, Independence Layout Enugu, donation of giant blood banking refrigerators with supporting generators to the ESUT Teaching Hospital at Parklane, and Oji River sub-district hospital, amongst other humanitarian projects.

Lady Ogugua Nwankwu stated that her one year in office would be an action packed one, adding that breast cancer, maternal healthcare and children at risk as well as micro-credit scheme for indigent persons, especially women would be her priority areas.

She used the occasion to announce that her formal installation would be on the 19th July, 2008 in Enugu and requested the governor’s presence at the occasion.

The district governor who was accompanied by Rtn. Emma Nwankpa, HRM Igwe Chris Ogakwu of Udi, amongst other senior Rotarians in the state, appealed for government’s financial support to enable the club to achieve its objects for the year.
